Interview with John Abbott, ex-engineer
1. Did you have flexible hours and/or holidays when working as a engineer?
I often worked long hours, but rarely got the time back. Holidays were booked in advance with plenty of notice so usually I could plan around them.
2. What subjects did you study at school? Why?
I studied Math, English, Geography, but most importantly Technical drawing and Technology because I knew I wanted, and was interested in a technical career.
3. What training/education did you have?
In the UK; GCE, OND in Mechanical engineering and HNC in Mechanical engineering. In Australia Asc.Dip in Mechanical Engineering. Plus various TAFE engineering courses over the years, particularly 3D parametric modelling courses (which I loved!)
4. What are some advantages or disadvantages did you experienced in this career?
Ads;- Good money in the right company, very challenging work, travelling all around the world with an expense account.
Dis:- Lots of stress and deadlines and issues dealing with contractors or third party solution providers, people management issues (machines are a lot easier!).
